Bioactive compounds in Haskap
There is growing scientific evidence of the potential health benefits from phenolic compounds found in certain fruit and vegetables, contributing to the prevention of various chronic diseases.
Haskap contains many phenolics: anthocyanins (majority cyanidin-3-O-glucoside C3G), phenolic acids (majority chlorogenic acid), and flavonols (majority luteolin, quercetin, and catechins)*.
Most chronic diseases are considered to be initiated by oxidative stress, and antioxidant properties of phenolic compounds have been demonstrated to play a vital role in reducing their risk. Tests have shown anthocyanins have twice the antioxidant power than Vitamin C**
Anthocyanins are a type of flavonoid, a class of compounds with antioxidant effects. Found naturally in a number of foods, anthocyanins are the pigments that give red, purple, and blue plants their rich colouring. The average anthocyanin content of haskap berries is 1080 mg per 100 g fresh weight of the fruit significantly higher than other fruit sources such as raspberry (50 mg/100 g), blackberry (100 mg/100 g), red currant (75 mg/100 g) and blueberry (150 mg/100 g)***
