I’ve never heard of Haskap berries, what are they?

Haskap berries are also known as honeysuckle or honeyberry, you might have heard of these names? Native bushes from cool temperate Northern Hemisphere in countries such as Canada, Japan, Russia, and Poland. Haskap was approved by EU as novel food in December 2018, with a history of safe consumption in Japan for more than 25 years. Well-known for its pro-health properties, the plant was traditionally used and recognized by Japanese Ainu aboriginals as "the elixir of life" (Thompson, 2006).

I’ve never tried Haskap berry, what does it taste like?

Haskap has a well-balanced sweet and tangy flavour, and it is best described as a mix between a raspberry and a blueberry. But try it yourself and if you come up with a different description, we would love to hear from you!

Haskap powder looks pricey, why is that?

To process the powder, we remove virtually all the water inside the Haskap, and like most fruits, Haskap berries are more than 90% water. That is, if we remove water from 100g of Haskap fruit, only 10g of fruit remains: the skin, the fibres, the sugars and most important, the nutrients!

So 100g of Haskap powder is equivalent to 1 kilogram of fresh fruit and if you compare gram for gram, it is similar in price to a punnet of blueberries or blackberries. And unlike fresh fruit, Haskap powder can be stored for long so nothing goes to waste. Not bad, right?

Is fresh fruit better than freeze-dried?

The quick answer is, not necessarily. Many vitamins start to fade the moment the fruit is picked. If you are eating seasonal fresh fruit, locally supplied with minimum storage then you are getting a good deal! But many other fruits are stored for a while losing some of its nutrients by the time they reach your plate. Haskap berries are frozen straight after harvest so all nutrients are kept inside. The freeze-drying is a dehydration process in which water is removed from the frozen fruit at high pressure and low temperature, so it does not destroy heat-sensitive nutrients like anthocyanins.

#6

What is so special about Haskap?

Haskap is an incredible source of anthocyanin. Research indicate Haskap berries have up to four times more anthocyanins and Vitamin C than blueberries.

#7

What are the health benefits of anthocyanins?

Considerable evidence shows significant antioxidant, cardio-protective, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anticancer, and anti-diabetic properties of anthocyanin-rich Haskap preparations and anthocyanin alone both in vitro and in vivo (Rupasinghe HPV 2018). Although epidemiological studies have not shown that anthocyanin intake reduces cancer risk in humans, they suggest that anthocyanin intake may reduce certain parameters of oxidative damage (Weisel T 2006).

#8

How much Haskap do I need to take to benefit from the anthocyanin properties?

There's no recommended daily intake however, the American Society for Nutrition (2019) stated “It can be safely stated that daily moderate intake (50 mg anthocyanins…) can mitigate the risk of diseases and conditions of major socioeconomic importance in the Western world”.

Different clinical trials have shown that higher concentrations of anthocyanin intake (up to 320mg/day) increased HDL cholesterol and reduced LDL cholesterol levels (Qin Y 2009 and Liu C 2016) and lowered fasting plasma glucose and cell resistance to insulin in diabetic patients (Li D 2005).

One teaspoon of Haskap powder or a handful of freeze-dried Haskap berries will give you more than 130mg of anthocyanin.

#9

When will I know if Haskap is having an effect on me?
